Default Difficult times spark home baking

An explosion in home breadmaking has been reported as the credit crunch bites and food prices continue to rise.

Bread-flour supplier Allinson reports sales are up by 50% in the last month alone as more families adopt a back-to-basics lifestyle.

Asda has introduced a significantly bigger range of home-baking products and appliances to gear up for the growing demand from a new generation of home bakers.

Core baking staples are also in high demand. Yeast sales are up 67%, flour 14% and dried fruit 9%. Families looking for a quick-fix baked treat have also helped push up sales of cake mixes by 15%.

Latest figures show that a home-made loaf of bread can cost as little as a third of the price of a shop-bought alternative - and the gap is set to grow with the average price of a loaf of bread up by 20% to over £1 in the past year whereas a bag of flour has only risen by 5%.

ASDA nutritionist Vanessa Hattersley said: "The revival is down to healthy eating and saving money as families realise that home baking is a great way to make ends meet."

the news could not be better lol

I can only imagine what it was like 50 years ago, where loads of houses that you walked past smelt like a bakers... I can only hope that it gives a great boost to food attitudes.

My friends and family have started cooking bread recently, although I'm not sure it's because of the credit crunch. This is a really good recipe for sweet bread with coconuts and cherries... perfect for christmas or thanksgiving:

I've been baking bread every now and then for some years, but regularly since I discovered sourdough baking this spring. I only bought bread a few times since then - because I killed my starter a couple of times in the summer when it was thunderstorm/mold weather.
Here in Germany we love dark and dense breads - with whole meal and often with whole grains too - and they are better made with sourdough. And with the sourdough all I have to buy is flour (and water from the tab).

Bread is on my to do list, funnily enough I cannot make a decent scone, no matter what recipe I use or any of the stoves I have owned.

I have just mastered savoury muffins, Lol.

OH would like a bread maker, mine you he wants me to geta pasta maker also ( Will get one and try my hand at that soon).

I am the dishwasher so the thought of having something else to clean really does not appeal that much as I spend so much time in the kitchen anyway.

We do like sourdough bread, so that sounds like a project at some stage.
